Caledonia Nature Trail with a twist

The Caledonia nature trail features one of the most beautiful water falls in Cyprus. A short 40 minute drive from the closest city, Limassol, and a delightful walk in the mountains makes this one of our favorite hikes on the island. The down side, for us, is that it’s not a circular trail. However, we added a little twist and made our way back to the starting point by improvising a bit and joining a different near by trail.

The Caledonian waterfall in PLatres as seen from the landing point just on the side of the trail.

The starting point is just by the main road that leads to Troodos. Plenty of space to park your car and get ready for an enjoyable walk in the forest. We would say this is a fairly easy hike, no major tricky parts and could easily be done by the whole family. You’ll be starting off on the side of a restaurant and as mentioned above you’ll be finishing roughly in the same spot but this is only the case because we took a detour. We use an app called Gaia GPS which has all trails nicely labelled and we also use it to track our hikes as you can see in the image below.

The total length of the is a bit over 8km and took us about 2 and a half hours to complete. We made a little stop at the waterfall and had a little bite to eat and continued on our little adventure. The walk towards the waterfall is along side a nice little stream with plenty of opportunity for photos and the chance to enjoy the peaceful sounds of running water.

After going past the waterfall it’s very easy to get to “the end” of the Caledonia trail. This is where we took our detour. Turning right after the end of the trail you’ll find yourself on a dirt road which will lead you onto a different trail called Pouziaris trail. This is a trail that has multiple paths with no great signs for direction, which is why we recommend you use the Gaia GPS app so you can follow your way back to where you started. It’s a very nice, mostly downhill, walk which exceptional views of the surrounding mountains. It starts off very open with exposure to the sun. Sunscreen and hats are recommended on a warm sunny day. While you get closer to the end you’ll find yourselves back in the forest and in the shade.

We did this hike on a cloudy day, so visibility wasn’t great but on a clear day you would probably be able to see the coastline as well.

Overall an enjoyable, easy walk in the mountains, with great scenery which has a nice mix of running waters, beautiful greenery and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
