Cape Aspro Natural Trail

Another sunny Sunday in Cyprus and that means another great chance to discover the one of the many trails this island has to offer. We’re in Pissouri once again, a village which is between the cities of Limassol and Pafos, this time exploring one of the routes of the Cape Aspro natural trail. I say “one of” as there are 7 to choose from. These 7 trails are colour coded (Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, Brown, Pink and Orange) and take different directions. We stumble across the starting point of the Blue Route and ended up exploring the path which we’re not sure follow any of the colour coded routes offered. We decided to walk along the coast and see where it takes us while enjoying the views from the beautiful cliffs of Cape Aspro. You can see a photo of the map that we followed a bit further down in this post.

This was not a circular route, meaning we had to come back the same way. It was a total of 8km with some steep walks on some loose ground in some places but overall and comfortable walk. We’d rate this as a moderate hike and the only reason we didn’t class it as easy is because of some difficult parts where concentration was needed to not slip while walking on a path with a drop on both sides. It took us about 4 hours to complete but we were stoping frequently to admire the views, take some photos and relax on of the pebble beaches this hike has to offer. Our total moving time was 3 hours with 1 hour of sitting around.

The starting point is situated close to the Columbia Beach Resort in Pissouri with a nice walk along the side of a hill with some “difficult” parts where ropes are provided for support and this leads to a pebble beach about 15 minutes into the hike. We crossed the beached and headed up the next hill where you can find some amazing rock formations and a view of Cape Aspro. An uphill walk towards the top of the hill where we would continue to walk along the coast until we decided where to stop and turn back.

The beautiful blues of the waters were captivating. The calm waters of the south coast of Cyprus just make you want to sit down admire the endless blue and enjoy the faded sounds of the waves travelling up to the top of the hill. After a small break for some photos and a bit of chit chat we continued our way up the hill, passing by what looked like a farm, which was empty so we didn’t get to spot any animals, although some people form the group did hear some sheep and decided to go off course and find them. Not going to lie, it was pretty funny listening to a few people walking on a mountain making sheep noises trying to communicate with animals that were nowhere to be seen.

After our failed attempt to locate the sheep, we kept on moving reached the top of the hill at which point the foot path naturally took us to the left and along the coast with an easier straight walk which brought us onto a dirt road. You could say the hike got a bit boring at this point, but you’d be wrong, the views were amazing, going to the edge of the cliff will lift you adrenaline seeing some weird massive holes in the ground will spark up conversations as to what these are. We still have no idea what they are but we saw a few of them on our way and we let our imagination go wild with assumptions.

After this dirt road ended we were back on a foot path at which point things started getting a bit more difficult, this would not stop us because the reward ahead seemed like it was worth it. An up hill walk to the tip of the hill which then turned into a steep down hill walk towards a pebble beach which seemed so peaceful, with no people and the perfect place to sit down for a while and relax. Unfortunately for us after getting to the tip of the hill we calculated how long it would take us to get down to the beach and then back to the car and decided it was time to turn back as we were running out of time. That beach is on our list to visit for sure at some point in the future maybe from a shorter trail as it is not accessible by car. At this point we also realised that if we had kept going, this trail would connect to another nature trail we wrote about, the Genesis Aphrodite’s Nature Trail so for the brave, that have a nice empty day and the will ta walk for a few hours, these two trails could be combined to get the best of the two worlds. The photo of the map seen below shows the two trails, the one on the left is the Genesis Aphrodites Nature Trail and the one on the right is the Cape Aspro Nature Trail.

Our way back was a bit more relaxing, we spotted some weird rocks, some of which we thought looked like a target for us, so naturally our inner child woke up and we started trying to hit the target, we decided to go back to the place we heard the sheep and look for them, which took us off track once again and down a path which is safe to say has not been used by anyone so some improvisation had to take place and back onto the first pebble beach which is 15 minutes from where we started. We decided to chill for a bit so again, our inner child woke up and we all starting trying to skip stones on the beautiful blue waters.
